Scott Mayfield(10) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Scott Mayfield

New York Islanders‘ 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft (#34 overall), defenseman Scott Mayfield(10) is using his large 6’4″ 210 lbs. to establish his shutdown, heavy hitting style of play.

He averaged well over triple digit penalty minutes in two years of USHL with Youngstown Phantoms and slightly under the mark through less games in another pair of seasons at University Of Denver.

He’s very much on track for another season of over 100 pims. In 54 AHL games he’s racked up 82 minutes with 6 fighting majors to his credit.

The rangy player is also showing an ability to put up points and may even surpass his American junior hockey career highs in goals and assists. He has 3 goals and 11 assists with a +9 rating on a squad that is just over an even record.

The 21-year is signed to a three-year entry level deal through 2016 and will likely get a long look at next year’s NHL training camp as the parent club definitely has to make some tough decisions about their defensive core.

Scooter Vaughan(7) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Scooter Vaughan

Undrafted 3rd year defenseman Scooter Vaughan(7) received his first call up to the AHL and is trying to make the most of it without looking back.

Signed to a second season with ECHL South Carolina Stingrays, after only 20 games into the current campaign he called up on a pto with Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Now 25 games into his tryout, he has 3 goals and 3 assists and has played in all types of on-ice situations, even being bumped up to a forward position.

The listed at 6′ (seems a bit generous) 195 lbs. blue liner was off to a fast start on the score sheet this season scoring a pair of goals and 6 assists and had his best showing in his sophomore season with 6 tallies and 14 helpers.

There appears to be little doubt that when he was picked up by the Stingrays after being released by Wheeling Nailers, where he played in his rookie year, a coach worked with him to shoot the puck more often and it’s improved his game tenfold.

The 24-year old will likely get an spc to finish out the regular season in the upper league.

Chris Langkow(54) Bridgeport Sound tigers

Chris Langkow2

Undrafted center Chris Langkow(54) started his fourth pro season much like he did the three previous campaigns, signed for a one-year minor league deal to play in the ECHL.

He posted career highs in scoring last season with 20 goals and 41 points, first with Reading Royals, who he signed with in the off-season and then traded to South Carolina Stingrays.

The 6’1″ 185 lbs. forward re-signed for another campaign with the Stingrays but after getting off to a fast start was loaned to Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the second time in his career and made it stick.

He was first with the team for most of the year in 2011/2012 but only appeared in 7 games scoring a goal and 4 assists before succumbing to injury and being returned to Alaska Aces some 4 months later.

He won the Kelly Cup with the Aces in his rookie season and was impressive throughout.

The 24-year old recently signed an spc to play out the remainder of the regular season in southern Connecticut.

His grinding 4th line style of play works well with the young Bridgeport team and with AHL career highs in games played (35), goals (2) and assists (7) he has the ability to dot the score sheet.

It would be no surprise to see him score a higher league contract out of the gate in 2014/2015. After all, he is a Langkow.

Mike Cornell(4) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Mike Cornell

Undrafted rookie defenseman Mike Cornell(4) spent five seasons in the Eastern (Junior) Hockey League starting as a high school age player before skating four years at University Of Maine. where he served as team captain in his final campaign.

He signed an ato out of college with Florida Everblades and appeared in 6 games dishing 4 helpers and also played in 13 Kelly Cup Playoff games, where he recorded 5 assists with a +8 rating through a pair of rounds before getting eliminated.

The not exactly huge out there 5’11” 190 lbs d-man plays a very physical game guarding the zone with his life pretty much.

To begin his first year pro he re-signed with the Everblades scoring his first goal and adding 5 assists in 12 ECHL games. He also owned a tidy +10 plus/minus.

Only  a month into the season Bridgeport Sound Tigers came a-calling and signed him to a pto.

He fit right in to the team’s style pretty much from the get-go and before you know it he’s 26 AHL games in and inked an spc to stay.

The late starting 25-year old has two goals and 5 assists with a -5 on a young squad that struggles at times.

He also has a coach that’s been telling him to shoot the puck, because he’s already put 47 shots on net and that’s definitely added to his ability to connect on the score sheet.

This one gets a #nicesurprise.

Chris Bruton(16) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Chris Bruton

Bridgeport Sound Tigers‘ 3rd year undrafted center Chris Bruton(16) was given a one-year, two-way NHL contract for 2013/2014 by New York Islanders to captain the young minor league affiliate squad.

Unfortunately he broke his hand early into the campaign and missed a month of action, leaving the team to field three assistants in his absence.

Upon his return, he has skated in 26 AHL games scoring a goal and an assist but is mostly counted on for his leadership and backing up his teammates when called upon.

He was team captain in his last season with Spokane Chiefs when they won both the Western Hockey League Championship and Memorial Cup. There was also an unfortunate incident that happened with the latter trophy.

At only 5’11” 205 lbs. he isn’t exactly the biggest guy out there but as his fighting record and time spent in the penalty box indicate, he welcomes any challenge.

One of those was after his junior career wrapped up, instead of turning pro immediately he decided to attend Acadia University.

After three years in school he signed his first contract with Alaska Aces after attending training camp with Peoria Rivermen but on his second loan to the club inked a deal in the higher league and re-signed for a 2012/2013.

The 26-year old definitely seems to be enjoying his time as mentor and could be headed for a nice coaching career once he’s ready to step off the ice.

Matt Lowry(17) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Matt Lowry

2nd year undrafted center Matt Lowry(17) signed a pto to join Bridgeport Sound Tigers after tearing it up in the early season with Evansville IceMen.

He posted 7 goals and 8 assists in 19 ECHL games with a +9 rating.

The feisty 6′ 190 lbs. forward originally an invite to Ottawa Senators‘ training camp in 2009, went down the ladder with Binghamton Senators after three seasons in the WHL, where he put up decent numbers (47-113-160 in 207 games) but was mostly reassigned to play with affiliate Elmira Jackals.

After his rookie season he decided to jump at an opportunity to enroll under a full free scholarship to attend University Of Manitoba.

At the conclusion of his third school year he signed an ato with Greenville Road Warriors. In 9 games he scored a goal and 3 assists but had no points in the playoffs.

The 25-year old has only 1 assist in 10 games with the Sound Tigers but the team has run an impressive 4-6 record with lineup stocked full of call-ups.

Pierre-Marc Bouchard(96) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

PM Bouchard

Former Minnesota Wild 1st round pick in the 2002 draft (#8 overall) veteran left wing Pierre-Marc Bouchard(96) is spending his first time in the AHL since the lockout season of 2004/2005, when he skated with minor league affiliate Houston Aeros.

A veteran of 12 seasons he’s skated 593 NHL games scoring a very tidy 110 goals and 246 assists with an overall +6 rating.

Standing at a mid-sized 5’10” with a small 175 lbs. frame, he’s a quick moving forward with great instincts but has also been injury-prone in the last few years and missed 2009/2010 altogether.

In the four previous seasons though, he was averaging almost 60 points a campaign with over 40 assists.

Reassigned to minor league affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers by New York Islanders, his first team other after a phenomenal 11 seasons with the Wild, he’s already put up a goal and 3 assists in 4 games.

The 29-year old is a great stabilizing presence for what is a young squad in the parent club’s prospect system.

He’s likely to reach the 600 game mark in the show but may need to wait another season.

Anders Lee(9) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Anders Lee

New York Islanders‘ 6th round pick in the 2009 draft (#152 overall) left wing Anders Lee(9) played a pair of NHL games fresh off finishing up his third season at University Of Notre Dame that culminated in an NCAA (CCHA) Championship.

He scored his first big league goal and added an assist in his debut.

He was also very close to a point per game player in college hockey scoring 61 goals and 55 assists in 125 games with a monstrous +33 rating.

The rangy 6’3″ 225 lbs. forward was unable to find his roster spot with the parent club to start his rookie campaign and reassigned to minor league affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

In his first 16 AHL games he has a mighty 6 goals and 7 assists out of the gate.

One would have to think if a spot opens up on the Islanders‘ lineup due to injury, the just turned 21-year old has to be one a short list for a recall.

Yann Danis(34) Adirondack Phantoms

Yann Danis

Undrafted 10th year veteran goalie Yann Danis(34) has played NHL games in four of his five last seasons. He had one campaign on the interim in the KHL.

Signed to a 1-year two-way deal with Philadelphia Flyers, he’s splitting time between the pipes for their minor league affiliate Adirondack Phantoms and is an invaluable mentor to young prospects in the system.

He has 284 regular season games of AHL experience with a roughly 2.46 GAA and .913 SV%. He was named goaltender of the league in 2012 for his consistent play.

The 5’11” 182 lbs. net minder also has 53 NHL games, mostly in one run with New York Islanders¬†but also appearances with Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and most recently for Edmonton Oilers.

His numbers in the show are a bit less impressive at 3.02 GAA and .891 SV% but they’ve mostly been when called in as the back-up.

The 32-year old will likely get his chance at another big league game and the trend will continue.

It will definitely be interesting to see where he lands for his 11th season in 2014/2015.

Mike Halmo(26) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Mike Halmo

New York Islanders‘ undrafted, 2nd year left wing Mike Halmo(26) is off to a flying start with minor league affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

In 8 games he’s already surpassed (by 1) the 5 goals he scored in 46 games from his rookie season. He’s also less than half a dozen assists and points away from eclipsing those marks as well.

The 5’11” 195 lbs. forward put up big numbers in his final year of juniors with Owen Sound Attack and may just be starting to catch fire on the score sheet as a pro. He also their captain and won an OHL Championship in 2010 with the team

He signed a three-year entry level deal that keeps him in the prospect system through 2015.

The 22-year old is making a solid argument that he belongs on a higher level of play but the parent club is probably waiting a little bit to see if he can sustain it.
